Diane Shaw: Our Shero Dedicated to Creating Seamless Transit Solutions

“The one good thing I think that all women have, and they don’t recognize, is the whole idea of emotional intelligence. I think we are much better at working with people, working with teams, and building those types of relationships in a work environment because we have to do that with our families. It’s just like sometimes raising kids—you’re the manager. And I think women are way better at that. They need to learn that those are their strengths, and they need to learn how to play off of their strengths.” – Diane Shaw

In this blog, we share the inspiring story of Diane Shaw, who serves as the Director of AC Transit for Ward 5 in Fremont, California. Having spent more than 14 years in transportation administration and driven by a lifetime love of public service, Shaw offers a great combination of knowledge and a real dedication to helping her community. This interview is from the longest running and most influential programs run by Global Women Power, Meet Our Sheroes, which is dedicated to sharing the narratives of remarkable women who have inspired generations of young women to dream big and do exceptional things.

From New England Origins to Leadership in the Bay Area

Growing up as the oldest of three siblings, Diane Shaw’s story started in New England. From New England Roots to Bay Area Leadership

Diane Shaw’s life began in New England, where she grew up as the eldest of three siblings. After graduating from college in Minnesota, Shaw traveled around the country until settling in Fremont, California, more than thirty years ago. Looking back on her early years, she acknowledged that the change was difficult.:

“When I first moved to Fremont, it was quite difficult. I worked on the Peninsula and chose Fremont for its affordability, but being away from colleagues and community was tough. Over time, though, I’ve come to appreciate Fremont, and I’m so glad I made this place my home.”

Shaw’s path into transit administration was not a deliberate professional one. But her everyday commute on the bus piqued an interest that developed into a profession. Over her fourteen years in San Mateo County, she became quite knowledgeable about transport systems and the need of accessibility for underprivileged groups.

Mentoring by seasoned American Public Transportation Association members helped her to develop her leadership by giving her knowledge of transit management in many different communities.

Shaw felt pulled back into the transit realm following a short retirement. She saw the ability to put her experience to use enhancing services in South County when the option to join AC Transit presented itself.

“My focus has always been on populations that rely heavily on transit—students, low-income individuals, and people with disabilities. I want to use my experience to enhance the rider experience and build a more sustainable transit system.”

Shaw’s leadership is characterised by adaptability and forward-thinking strategies. She underscores the necessity of modernising suburban transit systems to address the challenges of climate change and the changing requirements of communities, recognising the interconnectedness of transportation and housing.

“We can’t run systems the way we did 20 years ago. My goal is to bring fresh ideas and help this agency evolve for the future.”

Her Experiences in a Male-Dominated Industry

The enlightening discussion also shed light on her remarkable experience leading a female leader in a male-dominated field. She has spent decades overcoming obstacles, promoting change, and fighting for inclusion, making her an inspiration to women who want to succeed in the workplace.

Diane began her career in the aviation sector as an information technology employee at United Airlines.

This field and industry were primarily dominated by men. In her early career, she encountered gender-based challenges including unequal pay and power dynamics that frequently disadvantaged women.

“People assumed women in airlines were just flight attendants,” Diane recounted. “Men in similar roles were often paid more, and navigating these dynamics required careful strategies and resilience.”

Notwithstanding these challenges, Diane’s confidence developed with time because to her expertise and the encouragement of others close by.

“Confidence doesn’t come solely from within—it’s built by the people who help you recognize your abilities. A strong support structure is crucial, and I was fortunate to have that.”

Unique Strengths That Women Bring to Leadership : Emotional Intelligence and Team-Building

Her decision to concentrate on her job rather than juggling family and work enabled her to devote herself entirely to her professional development. Diane, on the other hand, recognises the difficulties that many women encounter in balancing the two and admires their perseverance.

Diane highlighted the unique strengths women bring to leadership, particularly their emotional intelligence and team-building abilities.

They need to learn that those are their strengths, and they need to learn how to play off of their strengths.”

The Role of Support Structures

Diane believes that organisations such as Global Women Power play an important part in instilling confidence and creating support systems for women.

Diane Shaw’s strong message emphasises the need of establishing environments that support women’s development, communication, and teamwork. It reminds us that when women come together, they magnify one another’s voices and boost their confidence, therefore enabling an environment in which they may flourish.

Every project and effort we conduct at Global Women Power reflects these values. We give women forums to tell their stories, grow from one another, and coordinate group efforts to meet obstacles. Our goal is to create a community that supports women’s empowermen from the impactful Meet Our Sheroes series, which highlights the journeys of accomplished women, to our support systems that enable members build relationships and uncover their talents.
